Determing Your Life Through Numerology

The mystical traditions, beliefs or theories of relationships between numbers and physical objects or between numbers and individuals is known as numerology.  If the numerology relationships are developed through the name of the person or object, the belief is known as name numerology.  Numerology was well known and practiced amongst ancient mathematicians such as Pythagoras.  Modern scientists do not consider numerology or name numerology to be science at all, but simply a type of pseudo science, not worthy of further consideration. The same progression has occurred in astrology to astronomy and alchemy to chemistry.  Numerology today is usually associated with divination, metaphysics and the occult along with other divinatory disciplines such as astrology.

The term numerology, if separated from the concept of foretelling the future has been applied to those who place excessive faith in numerical patterns, such as proponents of the Elliott Wave Theory of stock market or futures market analysis. Modern numerology and name numerology  in particular, contains aspects and concepts from various teachers and ancient cultures, including Pythagoras and his Greek followers from the 6th century BC, the Indian Vedas, Chinese "Circle of the Dead," Hebrew Kabbalah and several others.

Modern name numerology began with the work of Pythagoras and his followers, was updated by  Mrs. L Dow Balliett, who tied the Pythagorean efforts to the Biblical days of creation.  Her revision was polished by the efforts of her student, Juno Jordan in the 1970s into what is known today as the Pythagorean system of numerology.  Although St Augustine of Hippo praised numbers as the Universal Language given by God, by the Council of Nicaea, spiritual authorities were beginning to pull away from the spiritual associations of the numbers.

The meanings of the numbers in name numerology are not necessarily universally accepted, but many numerology systems have meanings similar to the ones below.

0. Everything or absoluteness or All
1. Individual or Aggressor or Yang
2. Balance or Union or Receptive or Yin
3. Communication/interaction or Neutrality
4. Creation
5. Action or Restlessness
6. Reaction/flux or Responsibility
7. Thought/consciousness
8. Power/sacrifice
9. Completion
        10. Rebirth

Name numerology works by naming the object or person about which there is a question or concern and then going through a process called digit summing.  Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number--in the English alphabet, that is numbers 1 through 26.  Then the name numerology numbers are added together until only a single digit remains.  The final step in the process of numerology is to draw interpretations and conclusions based on the symbolism of the remaining number.

Lucky numbers can be developed under the Chinese system of name numerology with such combinations as 516289 which means I will get on a long smooth prosperous road.  A type of numerology based on the birth date is also a form of divination.  Using name numerology is important. If parents want to give their child the best start in life, they will bestow a name that will have positive meanings or symbolism when using name numerology.  Since some cultures place far more importance on the name than in the West, naming a child can sometimes require weeks or even months to get everything just right.
